Connaught Champions Once Again

Yesterday, the 9th of December, the Senior Camogie team defeated St.Brigid’s of Loughrea in the Connaught Colleges Connaught Final which was held in Killimor.
Loughrea got off to a good start with a point by their corner forward Rachel Monaghan in the fourth minute. Their luck continued with two further points from play in the tenth and seventeenth minutes, scored by Aoife Donoghue and Rachel Monaghan. After eighteen minutes of Loughrea having the majority of the possession Portumna took control of the game with a point from play from Niamh McClearn. In the twentieth minute Edel Cunningham was brought in full forward in place of Lorraine Donnelan. These fresh legs brought life to the Portumna team and five minutes later Nicola Muldoon scored another point from play for Portumna. Loughrea replied quickly with a point from Rachel Monaghan. Portumna regained possession and sent the ball back up the field where Loughrea conceded a free. This was put over the bar , another point for Portumna. At the half time whistle the score was Portumna 0-3 Loughrea 0-4.
Both teams came out of the dressing rooms determined. After a great save from Helen Campbell (Capt.) Ruth Kilkenny was injured and had to be taken off. Aine Dervan was brought in corner back in her place. Both teams ploughed on.. In the fortieth minute Portumna received a ‘45 which was pointed by Anna-Maria Lagana. Portumna 0-4 Loughrea 0-5. Soon after Niamh Molloy was brought in for Louise Loughnane .In the forty-fifth minute Laura Loughnane was brought in corner forward in place of Helen Quinn. Loughrea scored yet another point in the forty-eight minute. After a ‘45 was conceded by Portumna. Loughrea scored another point. With only four minutes of normal tine on the clock things looked grim for Portumna. Karen Brien came with an excellent point to put Portumna back in the running. In the last minute of normal time Karen Brien scored a goal for Portumna. Portumna 1-5 Loughrea 0-7 It seemed like they had pipped Loughrea to the post when in the second minute of extra time a ‘45 saw Loughrea to draw the match once again. The crowd had resigned themselves to the fact that extra time would be played, when out of no where Karen Brier has the ball in the full forward line, she shoots and she scores. The final whistles blows seconds later and Portumna are Connaught Champions once again.
The match was a great display of determination and team work. Well done to all the girls involved, Ms.Cunningham and Mr.Kelly
